Biography: Shelly Cummings, MS, CGC is a board-certified genetic counselor with more than 30 years of experience spanning clinical practice, academia, and industry. She spent 13 years at the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she served as Assistant Director of the Cancer Risk Clinic and Senior Genetic Counselor, and held faculty appointments at Northwestern University’s Graduate Program in Genetic Counseling. She then built a 17-year career at Myriad Genetics, rising to Vice President of Oncology Medical Affairs — leading cross-functional teams, shaping medical strategy, and working across oncology, diagnostics, and precision medicine. She is currently Senior Director of Ecosystem Growth and Scientific Engagement at Truveta.
 
Throughout her career, Shelly has mentored and coached hundreds of students, fellows, and professionals across clinical, academic, and industry settings. She has authored or co-authored 40+ peer-reviewed publications, served as Executive Editor of the NSGC Perspectives Newsletter, and was named to The Pathologist Power List: Leading Voices Edition in 2025. She founded The Career Allele to bring that depth of experience directly to genetic counselors navigating the job market — offering the kind of insider guidance, strategic coaching, and real-world perspective that can make all the difference.
